Committing to Christ and His church is not a one-time decision, but a lifelong journey. In this blog post, we will explore the example of the Apostle Paul in Philippians 3 and learn about the perseverance and determination it takes to remain committed to our faith. We will also be encouraged to press on towards the goal of Christlikeness, knowing that our commitment will be rewarded in eternity.
Commitment to Christ is not a sprint, but a marathon. It requires endurance, determination, and a willingness to press on even when the path ahead seems difficult. The Apostle Paul understood this well, as he faced numerous challenges and setbacks throughout his ministry. Yet, he never wavered in his commitment to the gospel and to the mission of making disciples of all nations.
In Philippians 3, Paul shares his own personal journey of perseverance, writing, "Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own" (Philippians 3:12). Despite his impressive credentials and accomplishments, Paul recognized that he had not yet attained the fullness of Christlikeness. He was still on a journey, still striving to grow in his faith and to become more like his Savior.
One of the keys to Paul's perseverance was his ability to forget what lay behind and to press on towards the goal. He writes, "But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on towards the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:13-14).
This is a powerful reminder for us as well. It's easy to get bogged down by our past failures, mistakes, and shortcomings. We may feel that we've already blown it, that we've gone too far down the wrong path to ever find our way back. But Paul's example teaches us that we must let go of the past and focus on the future. We must press on, straining forward towards the goal of Christlikeness, trusting that God is at work in our lives and that He will complete the good work He has begun in us.
What does it mean to press on towards the goal? For Paul, it meant a relentless pursuit of Christlikeness, a determination to grow in his faith and to become more like his Savior with each passing day. He writes, "I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own" (Philippians 3:12).
This is a powerful reminder for us as well. Our goal is not simply to check off a list of religious duties or to accumulate a certain number of good deeds. Our goal is to become more like Christ, to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, and to live out the reality of our identity as children of God.
This is a lifelong process, and it requires a deep commitment to personal growth and spiritual discipline. It means setting aside time for prayer, for Bible study, for fellowship with other believers. It means being willing to take risks, to step out of our comfort zones, and to embrace the challenges that come with following Christ.
As we press on towards the goal of Christlikeness, we can take comfort in the knowledge that our commitment will be rewarded in eternity. Paul writes, "I press on towards the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:14).
This "upward call" refers to the ultimate goal of our faith – the promise of eternal life and the opportunity to dwell in the presence of God forever. When we persevere in our commitment to Christ, when we refuse to give up in the face of adversity, we are laying up for ourselves a treasure in heaven that will far outweigh any temporary hardship or suffering we may experience in this life.
This is a powerful motivation to keep pressing on, to continue growing in our faith, and to remain steadfast in our commitment to Christ and His church. No matter how difficult the journey may be, we can take comfort in the knowledge that our perseverance will be rewarded with the ultimate prize – the joy of spending eternity in the presence of our Savior.
Committing to Christ and His church is not a one-time decision, but a lifelong journey. It requires perseverance, determination, and a willingness to press on even when the path ahead seems difficult. In this blog post, we have explored the example of the Apostle Paul and the lessons we can learn from his commitment to Christlikeness.
As we seek to follow in Paul's footsteps, let us be encouraged to forget what lies behind, to press on towards the goal of Christlikeness, and to trust that our commitment will be rewarded in eternity. May we be a people who are marked by our unwavering devotion to Christ, our unshakable faith, and our relentless pursuit of the prize that awaits us in heaven.
